HOW TO: Make Vintage High-Waisted Jean shorts....

I really wanted a pair of high waisted jean short for a while.. I found a pair that I liked from UrbanRenewal but since all of their clothes aren't the same and may not look/fit like they do on the picture...I also have been lusting after a pair from RUNWAYDREAMZ but didn't feel it was right to spend that kind of money on jean shorts that I surely could do myself...If I only knew now... I did a lot of research on how to get them just right. Lots of people said "shred the jeans, use a cheese grader," and other tedious and time consuming methods. I tried them, but they were so much work and were so difficult, that I thought there must be a better method.. Then I came across a fellow blogger's tutorial which was simple and easy, but most importantly, IT WORKED! So here I will show you the best way to create that distressed, vintage, high waisted look that anyone can do...

Steps...

1st-- Go to your local Goodwill store and try on some high waisted jeans. Don't waist your money going out and buying expensive jeans for this project, the end result will look the same, plus more worn = more distressed....what do you think vintage is!! (MAKE SURE that you do NOT buy a stretchy pair, because they don't fray) I also suggest to pick a pair that are a bit snug in the butt, this is so they don't flair out once you have cut them...

2nd-- Grab your favorite pair of shorts that have the desired length to them. This will be your measuring tool. Fold your shorts and your jeans in half at the seam, vertically and put the sorts on top of the jeans. When you measure your length, make sure that you line up the crotch seems not the waist line! This is because the waist heights on the jeans and the shorts may not match up... so just measure from the crotch seam down.

3rd-- Cut both legs of the jeans at once matching up to the shorts. (remember you can always make them shorter but you can't make them longer, so if you want to be safe, measure a little longer, try them on and then go back and cut again) MAKE SURE you do not cut out the crotch seam of your pants! This will cause you to have a skirt...not shorts. Like this!...

4th-- Once you have cut your jeans into shorts, the next step is to cut slits! Where ever desired cut horizontal slits on the legs of your shorts, make sure you do more than one slit in a row and only 1/2 an inch apart. Slits cut too close together will cause a big hole and slits too far apart won't have desired effect. MAKE SURE you don't cut through your pocket or the seam of the shorts. (Again, if you want to be safe, cut only a few slits and then once you are done, cut more if desired.)

5th-- After you are done cutting as many slits through out you shorts as you wish, just throw them in the washing machine! Then, dry them and voila! beautifully distressed jean shorts! If they are not as frayed as you wanted just throw them in the wash for a second time and that will do the trick.

heres the results!!
(if you wanted higher waisted, different color just buy accordingly! I used levi 505s!)
here you are! I probably should have chosen a higher waist...oh well!

You can't tell here, but the higher the waist is the smaller it looks!

Plus..higher waist gives better butt!!
